What does my role as a child of God mean? So the Christian life is both interesting and baffling at the same time because of the many hats we wear. Once you accept to become a citizen of the kingdom of God, several things happen. Your role changes and becomes multifaceted, you now become a child, disciple, servant, priest, King. I think out of all these roles the most important is child. Because it speaks to the loving relationship between a father and a child. Jesus taught us to pray to our Father who art in heaven. God is a loving father who listens to us and desires to have a relationship with us. Where we depend on Him and trust Him to be good to us.
I find it amazing that children are born with the default setting of trust. Babies innately trust their carers and this is essential for their survival because they need to depend on others to meet their needs. As a child of God we are expected to trust Him. Proverbs 3:5 states “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding“. This calls for absolute, non-doubting faith and I must admit I am not there yet. What I struggle with is letting go and giving complete control over to God. I always seem to self sabotage though my intention is to fully relinquish control. I seem to always retain some level of control unconsciously.
A sure sign that we love Him is that we obey Him. Obeying God is two fold, it is for our own good and two it is a witness to the world that He is a good Father. Obedience is saying not my will but yours be done just like Jesus on the night He was betrayed. My list of excuses is long from as useless as”not now’ to as deep as ‘why’. I find that when I don’t want to do something I am quite creative in finding ways of avoiding or ignoring the prompting of the still small voice. I have also found that I actually have a certain view on what my obedience should look like. Hence it is so important to renew one’s mind by studying what God says in His word. Learning what we should do and how we should behave.

As a child of God it is important that we represent Him here on earth. Our lives should be a testament to who He is. We should be used of God to portray to the world, what is means to be a member of God’s family. Our lives or the way we conduct ourselves should cause the world to say, ‘I want to be like them when I grow up‘. The way we believers face challenges or rise up to the occasion should cause the world to aspire to be like us. The way we live our lives and conduct ourselves should cause other ‘potential children’ of God to desire to have a relationship with Him.
