But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light(1 Peter 2:9).
Bestowed the title of priest in the Kingdom of God. Personally I don’t think I have ever had a more majestic title than this in my whole life! First bask in the privilege of being chosen which means carefully selected. The Lord has declared that you are His, precious in His sight. Not only are we precious but we are priests and this is another role that we are called to fulfil. This should be the fourth role we are discussing, first was role of child of God. Second role is servant of God. Third role identified is disciple of Jesus. Please go back and check what I wrote because the purpose of this mini series is to help us identify what we are called to be and do.
In Revelation 1:6 Jesus after washing away our sins made us kings and priests. So like Jesus we should intercede on behalf of others to the Father. We should take up the challenge of offering prayers on behalf of our neighbours, community and nations. Because we have been deemed holy through salvation therefore we can approach the throne of mercy and grace with confidence. Therefore we should not be afraid of making requests on behalf of others. I actually find that it is easier to pray for others because unlike when I am praying for myself I don’t have a running commentary of my pasts misdeeds. I appear to be capable of extending more grace to others.
A blessing should uplift, encourage and comfort. A blessing should be sincere and convey love and compassion. If you don’t know where to start let me share three of my favourites. Numbers 6:24-26, my earliest recollection of this blessing is from boarding school. We sang it at the end of every term. The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you, the Lord turn His face towards you and give you peace. Another favourite is from Psalms 23 verse 6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. The third one is from the new testament, 2 Corinthians 13:14. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

I think that it is amazing that as priests we get to give sacrifices of praise. Why is it important to praise God? 1. God inhabits the praises of His people, so when we praise we can be sure He comes down. 2. Praising God reminds us of who He is. Which is very relevant no matter what we may be facing. 3. Praising God declares our faith in Him. This acts as a witness to others. 5. Praising God is a battle cry, that brings about victory. 6. Praising God lifts our spirits, empowering us to overcome our challenges. 7. Praising God blesses Him, so if you have ever wondered about how to bless God, this is your answer!
