Love is God’s most powerful language. The death of His one and only son on the cross is the strongest statement He ever made. I for one believe that after that there was nothing more to say. However, it is sad that the world at large ignored His statement. For us who are privileged to know Christ and what His life, death and resurrection represents, we are free to live a life no longer slaves to sin. Love is how He lets us know that we are important to Him. It is very difficult to argue with love because it has the unique quality of making things alright. If you do not doubt you are loved, your self esteem goes up and your ability to face challenges increases. You may not even succeed in your pursuit of excellence but you can be content and well pleased with the effort exerted.
How do we know God loves us? He tells us in the bible that He sent His only begotten Son to die on the cross for our sins so that we would have eternal life. What is eternal life? Eternal life is relationship with God. He is that passionate about us, He made a way to be reunited with us after the fall of mankind. Adam and Eve aspired to be like God knowing good and evil. They were not content with being created in His image. Unfortunately they desired a knowing that put them at loggerheads with the Creator. They desired a power that would make them independent of God. This created the crisis that Jesus came to fix.
When God says He loves us, He loves us perfectly. It means He is kind, patient, not proud, not envious, does not dishonour us. He is not self seeking, not easily angered, keeps no records of wrongs. God does not delight in evil but rejoices in truth. He always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres. The image I get about God loving me perfectly is when He is kind to me, that He remembers my sins no more. Knowing that God loves us should equip us to love others. We should pay it forward, we should be the kindness we want to see in the world. Dont wait to receive it, initiate it.
This Easter let us contemplate His great love. The love of the Father who sent His son. And the love of the Son who willingly obeyed His father. It is a tale of sacrifice, an immense sacrifice. Because Jesus on the cross bore all the wrath that God had towards sin. His death was already a horrible death by human standards and then God added to it by laying on Him all the sin of mankind. We have much to celebrate, Happy Easter!
