Afro-Christian Romance Writer
The depiction of love today does not often reflect the lived experience of most Africans. Coupled with the systemic distortions of colonialism and the history of slavery, positive images of black love and black romance are few and far apart, if not all together missing. Add to this the complexity of Christianity, as practiced on the African continent, complete with its seasoning of cultural traditions and practices around initiation and marriage and you get a plethora of negative images villified for being "backward", "ancient", and "unchristian". Decades of the skewed depiction of romantic love as a "white" concept, and the distancing of afro-black culture from this imagery has brought much damage to our African and Christian identity as lovers.
The reality is that Black and African people enjoy romantic and wholesome love, relationships and healthy marriages within the context of Christian life and balanced African traditions. My job is to depict this reality in through literary works, theatre and film, in a way that tells our story of Love, for God, and each other, in a manner that is representative of our reality, and and respectful of our distinctiveness. Statistics on divorce and broken homes globally are testament that the world desperately needs a different narrative on love and the family, and it is my prayer that my works contribute towards bringing healing and salvation to the lives of all those who interact with them.
