Spending time with God is a prerequisite for increased intimacy with Him.
Intimacy, thanks to my African upbringing is a word that makes me blush! God created us for fellowship, God longs to have a relationship with us. God wants us to love Him with all our heart , our soul and with all our mind. To have a relationship with Him we need to get to know Him. One sure way is by spending time with Him. It doesnโt have to be elaborate because God is omnipresent which means He is with us always and everywhere. We dont have to go looking for Him, all we have to do is call on Him. And we donโt have to shout either, remember He is right there with us and He is not deaf!
There is no single prescribed way of spending time with God. Spending time with God is as varied as our personality types and our individual levels of maturity. The truth is the level of intimacy you achieve is equal to the amount of effort you put in. There is that word again intimacy. Intimacy is close personal relationship. I like this definition because we believe that Jesus is our personal saviour. I have found depending on the season I am in I tend to either crave quiet where I just sit still, or I burst into song. Thank you Jesus, for smart phones and playlists.
Intimacy will require you to intentionally draw close to Him. Things that I have put in practice which have nurtured this relationship is thanksgiving. When I praise and thank Him for what He has done in my life, trust in Him increases and faith rises up. When I meditate on His promises and choose to believe that it is true in my life I feel closer to Him. Where I have identified my opportunity for growth is having the two way conversation with Him. I tend to ask, go away and later on get the answer to what I asked but I would love to be able to sit still and hear His answer immediately! That would be so cool!
What I have come to realise and appreciate about God being omnipresent is He is here with me all the time. He sees what I am doing all the time and so there is really no point in keeping Him out. One of the smart things I have learnt in 2022 is that I can have a vision for my prayer life. As I grow in intimacy and draw closer to God, my vision is for God to tell me as He told Moses in Exodus, take off your sandals because where you are standing is holy ground.
