How can we know God is trustworthy? Simple, He says He is. His word the bible tells us, it contains statements that He Himself has made declaring that He can be trusted, Proverbs 3:5 ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart‘. God declares that His word means something. That His word is truth and not subjective truth but the whole truth. His word remains the same whether it gets Him followers or not. The bible also contains stories of God being trustworthy despite the provocation and the tendency of humans to circumvent His word. Once God has given His word, He will stick by it even if He is the only one who does.
It has been said that over 300 prophecies about Jesus were declared thousands of years before Jesus showed up on earth and they all came true. At the fall of man God immediately declared that He would send Jesus. And He did, several thousand years later but He did. God is trustworthy because He is patient, He is steadfast and He is unshakeable. What I find most fascinating is that God threatened to send Jesus, He didn’t keep His plan a secret. And Jesus didn’t come as a fully grown adult He came as a baby and was subjected to the same conditions that His people faced.
A definitive way of knowing God is trustworthy is He answers prayers. To encourage myself as I wait on the Lord to answer my prayers, I read the bible. I read, reflect and meditate on people in the bible who had some real challenging times. The stories in the bible may just be a couple of lines, paragraphs, chapters or in some cases a number of books. What these stories have in common is God coming through in the end and answering the prayer of the person or persons involved.
To know Him is to trust Him, God desires to be in relationship with us. God called Abraham His friend. And when Jesus came on earth, He didn’t employ slaves nor servants, He called twelve men to be His friends. Jesus entrusted His ministry to men He called friends. So for you to trust God, you should endeavour to become His friend. It will require you spend time with Him and choose His word above everything else.
