Jesus said, it is finished. Do you believe it? I must confess I have always been fascinated by this set of words, ‘It is finished“. A dying man’s words are very significant and Jesus is no ordinary man. What is finished and how did Jesus know it was finished? We will have to start at the beginning, why was Jesus on the cross in the first place, how did He end up there? Did He have a choice in the matter? What was His purpose, what was His goal? If I was the one on the cross due to no fault on my part. I would wonder if it was a good idea and would probably have a few choice words for the architect of my problems!
John 3:16 For God so loved the word that He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God the Father sent Jesus His son to earth to deliver us from the curse of death. Jesus was sent to redeem us, to purchase us with His precious blood, the blood of an unblemished lamb. So that we would be reconciled to God. God spent His wrath against sin on Jesus as He hung on the cross. Jesus said it is finished because all the prophecies about his suffering and the sacrifice and shame have been fulfilled from Him being born as a baby to Him hanging on the cross naked, broken and bruised.
So why was Jesus on the cross in the first place, how did He end up there? According to the word of God, humankind is the reason. Sin is purposely disobeying God or rebellion against God. Sin entered the world through Adam causing us to be separated from God. Sometimes we tend to forget that one of God’s numerous attributes is Holiness and holiness cannot abide with sin. God came up with the redemption plan to save us sinners. And this plan required a sacrifice and Jesus offered up His life. So Jesus had a choice in the matter, He was not an unwilling victim.
To believe is to put your faith in something. As Christians we have no problems believing that Jesus died for our sins. However salvation was not only about sins because Jesus came to restore what had been lost what had been stolen from us. Because our enemy is an opportunist and in John 10:10 he comes to steal, kill and destroy. But Jesus came that we may have life and have it abundantly. My suggestion to you is take a long hard look at your life, what has been stolen, killed or destroyed? Then put your faith in the one who said “It is finished’!
