How strong is the foundation your life is built on? Is it solid as a rock or does it shift and change depending on the circumstances of your life?
The foundation you build your life on, is not something that you may be conscious about until something happens that threatens it. What you are standing on determines your responses to events in your life. Your values, beliefs, thoughts and even the vision for your life make up your foundation. Cultural heritage, family values and life’s experiences up to this point also shape your foundation. It only becomes visible and relevant when life through storms, trials, valleys and even successes puts it to the test.
As believers our foundations should be Jesus Christ, the word made flesh. However, many times our perceived rights, abilities, strengths or even tolerance levels make up our foundation. As we mature in Christ we get to distinguish between tests and temptations. God orchestrates tests to grow and nurture us while temptations are from the enemy whose main agenda is our failure. So when we are in a test, our key focus should not be whining about our circumstances or trying to evade the circumstances altogether but it should be about what is God trying to teach us in this situation. I am learning to recognise when I am in a storm and to establish what foundation I am basing my faith on in that instance. On the other hand we are not to entertain temptations, we are to resist and rebuke the enemy.
Fear and unbelief can keep us from moving forward or from moving past when caught up in a test. The critical question to ask is; what or in whom do you put your faith, trust and hope in? The good news is that you can rebuild it at any time.
So what do we get when Jesus is the foundation in our lives? Perfect love cast out fear, therefore we are bold, we are courageous! Abundant life is ours because that is why He came. Jesus bore the wrath of God and shed his precious blood for our sins so we are forgiven. We no longer fear death because He defeated death.
Who your faith is in is also a good determinant of what your foundation looks like and if it will weather the storms of life!
